Daily Devotionals: (March 22nd) Grace, Marvellous Grace

Reading: 1 Peter 1:10

Some time ago in my regular Sunday morning service I posed the question: “What would make God spare sinners?” I went on to explain that it wasn’t because of our own righteousness or our own works, or even our own religion because all of these things are stained by sin and therefore earn no favour with God. The only reason that makes God spare sinners is His own free, sovereign, and saving grace. God is the author of salvation. He is the one who chooses and saves. He sets His undeserved favour on those who deserve His wrath. It is all of grace. That leads me to note certain things:

The foundation of God’s grace. 1 John 4:8 makes that awesome statement: God is love. This truth lies at the foundation of God’s salvation. He saves because He loves. He pardons because He loves. He redeems because He loves. There is no other reason. Paul brings those two thoughts together in 2 Corinthians 13:14 when he speaks of “the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God.” Divine love and divine grace are inseparable! Those whom God has loved and chosen from before the foundation of the world will know and experience His grace in salvation.

The fullness of God’s grace. God’s grace abounds; that is, it exceeds and is beyond measure. God’s grace is greater than sin. There is grace to cover all my sin, grace to give me peace with God, grace to make me fit for heaven, and grace to give me assurance of everlasting life—grace for every need!

The freeness of God’s grace. There is no other way to say this but “grace is grace.” It is a free gift. I don’t deserve it and I cannot earn it; it is grace freely given by a sovereign God. Let us meditate on that truth: Salvation provided by grace.

That one word saved is enough to make a heart dance as long as life remains. (C. H. Spurgeon, 23:343)
