Daily Devotionals (June 1st): Contagious Confidence

Yawning is contagious. I am not sure if this theory is scientifically proven; perhaps some university research team has considered it. It is also said that negativity is contagious. We have all met pessimistic persons and it seems that an atmosphere of negativity follows them.

The ability to communicate physical feelings, emotions, and spiritual conditions without words is a phenomenon worthy of our consideration as Christians if we are going to be role models to those around us (see Philippians 3:17-19). Paul told the Philippians that spiritual confidence is contagious. When the Christians in Rome saw the confidence and contentment of Paul in the adversities of the gospel they were emboldened to stand; confidence was communicated to them through Paul’s confidence.

There is comfort in the gospel that is communicated without words and indeed that cannot be adequately communicated in words. Paul’s life in adversity accomplished more in some lives than his preaching did. Paul’s life communicated a confidence in Christ that he could not communicate with words.

Reading:And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.”—Philippians 1:14
